The required-score formula

Only three numbers matter: your current average C, the final’s weight w, and your target T. The rest of the course has already banked C × (1 − w) points toward the final grade, so the final must supply the remainder: required = (T − C × (1 − w)) ÷ w. At 85% current, a 20% final, and a 90% target, that is (90 − 68) ÷ 0.20 = 110%.

Reading an impossible number

A required score above 100% simply means the target is mathematically out of reach — the banked points cannot carry the course that high no matter what you score. A result of zero or less means the opposite: the target is already secured before you sit the exam.

Finding your current grade

Weight your categories first: multiply each category average by its weight and add them up (a weighted-grade calculator does exactly this). If the class runs on total points instead — points earned divided by points possible — use that ratio as your current grade.

Worked example

  1. You hold a 74% average; the final is worth 40%.
  2. Banked points: 74 × 0.60 = 44.4%.
  3. To finish with 80%: (80 − 44.4) ÷ 0.40 = 89%.
  4. Score 89% or better on the final and the B is yours.

How to use it

  1. Enter your current average as it appears in the portal.
  2. Type the final’s weight from the syllabus.
  3. Set the course grade you are aiming for.
  4. Read the required score, then check the what-if rows for other targets.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?

Subtract the points your current grade has already banked from your target, then divide by the final’s weight as a decimal: (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w. The calculator substitutes your numbers and shows the result.

What do I need on my final to get an A?

Set the target to 90% (or your school’s A cutoff) and read the required score. With an 88% average and a 25% final, you need (90 − 66) ÷ 0.25 = 96% — tough but possible.

Why does the calculator say I need over 100%?

Because the banked points fall short: even a perfect final cannot lift the weighted average to your target. The what-if rows show which letter grades remain reachable.

How much does the final affect my course grade?

Exactly its weight. A 20% final moves your course grade by at most 20 points − a perfect final adds (100 − current) × 0.20; scoring zero subtracts current × 0.20. Heavier finals swing both ways harder.

What if my class uses total points instead of weights?

Divide points earned by points possible so far for your current percentage, and set the final’s weight to its points divided by the total course points. The same formula then applies.

What if the final replaces my lowest exam score?

Recalculate your current average as if the replacement already happened, then use that higher figure here. Replacement policies effectively raise your banked points before the final is even taken.
