How square footage is calculated
For any rectangle, area = length × width. Because tape measures read feet and inches while flooring sells by the square foot, this tool converts the inches first: 16 ft 4 in becomes 16 + 4 ÷ 12 = 16.333 ft before multiplying.
Multiples and waste
The identical spaces multiplier repeats one measurement across matching rooms — three 12 × 10 bedrooms become 360 ft² in one pass. The waste factor then pads the total for cuts, damaged boards, and seam placement. Real flooring shipments arrive in boxes, so the results also divide by a typical 32 ft² box.
Square yards and acres
Carpet is still sold by the square yard — divide square feet by 9. Land is measured in acres at 43,560 ft² each, which is why even a huge house plots as a fraction of one. Both conversions appear as rows so you can quote either unit.
Measure length and width wall to wall; put leftover inches in the inch fields.
Set the identical-spaces count for repeated rooms.
Keep the waste factor at 10% for straight layouts, 15% for diagonal or patterned.
Use the adjusted area to order flooring, or the square-yard row for carpet.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate square footage?
Multiply length by width in feet: a 12 × 10 room is 120 ft². For measurements in feet and inches, convert the inches to feet first by dividing by 12, which the inch fields here do automatically.
Why does the result include a waste factor?
Cuts at the walls, defects, and matching a pattern all consume material beyond the measured area. Flooring installers typically add 10%; skipping it is the most common way to run one box short on delivery day.
Is a square yard the same as a square foot?
No — one square yard equals 9 square feet (3 ft × 3 ft). Carpet and some vinyl are priced per square yard, so divide the ft² figure by 9 before comparing prices.
How many square feet are in an acre?
One acre is 43,560 ft². Even a 4,000 ft² home footprint covers only about 0.09 acres, which is why lot sizes dominate yard projects.
Can it handle multiple identical rooms?
Yes. Enter one room’s dimensions and set the identical-spaces count to 3 for three matching bedrooms — the measured total multiplies before waste is added.
What about L-shaped or circular rooms?
Split an L-shape into two rectangles, run each separately, and add the results. Circles and triangles need their own formulas; for planting beds see the mulch calculator, which supports both shapes.
